Church Street Coleraine, North Side, 1900s

[Nos. 19 to 27a on Griffith's Map]

This photograph was probably taken around 1900. The shops with the awnings plus J. Mills (Grocer) were all redeveloped by 1909 into three premises - see previous photograph for details. The occupants of these shops, at the time when this photograph was taken, were as follows - [No. 28] James F. Nevin (Tobacconist) since 1884; [No. 27a] Hugh A. G. Black (Confectioner & Tea Rooms) since 1886; [No. 27] William J. Long (Boot Merchant) since 1878; [No. 26] John Mills (Grocer) since 1872, replaced by W. T. Montgomery who was listed in the 1901 Census Returns. Note that Long and Nevin were also listed in the 1901 Census Returns and a Hugh A. G. Black (aged 36 and a Master Confectioner) was listed in the 1901 Census Returns in the townland of Ballysally on the outskirts of the town.

[No. 25] had been occupied by Thomas McFarlane (Cabinetmaker & Undertaker) since 1891. The family was listed in both the 1901 and 1911 Census Returns and continued to occupy these premises until the 1960s. They also took over [nos. 21 & 22] further up the street as T. D. MacFarlane, Ford Depot. The occupants of the remainder of the houses and shops in this row will be described in the next photograph.
