In 1859 the Market House was located in the Diamond. This 2007 photograph taken from the corner of present day Market Street and Queen Street looks down Broad Street. The building on the left hand corner would have been No. 2, the Diamond  in the Griffith's Valuation and the building on the right hand corner would have been No. 34.  The Market House, which was No. 1 in Griffith's, would have occupied the area around the roundabout.

 

This photograph taken from the corner of present day Market Street and Queen Street shows the present day buildings occupying the same space as Nos. 2, 3 and 4 in the Griffith's Valuation of 1859. No. 2 would have included Top 40 and the building on the corner with Broad Street. No. 3 is now Ditty's and No. 4 is the Newsagent and Toy Shop. If you look carefully at the 1859 map you will see an entry marked between number 4 and the next building in Rainey Street. This photo shows that same entry today [closed off by a gate] between the Newsagents/Toy Shop and the Alliance & Leicester office.

This photograph shows No. 10 in the Griffith's Valuation of 1859 on the corner of present day Market Street and Queen Street. No. 9 is directly to the right of No. 10.
