Wills and Letters of Administration

Once the date of a death of an ancestor has been discovered, it is worth finding out whether they left a will. Since many of the wills that you are likely to consult are held in PRONI it would be best to begin by reading the PRONI Information Leaflet Wills and Testamentary Records.

PRONI are currently engaged in a project to index and digitise all the early wills that were proved in the District Probate Registries of Armagh, Belfast and Londonderry from 1858 to c.1900. The first phase of this project has provided a fully searchable index to the will calendar entries for these three District Probate Registries with the facility to view the entire will calendar entry for each successful search. The second phase will link the index entries to the transcripts of the wills. Click here for access to the wills section of the PRONI website.

UHF also have databases of indexes of wills. Those relevant to Co. Londonderry are listed in the table below. Note, however, these databases are only accessible to members of the UHF.
