Griffith's Revisions c.1860-c.1930 and the General Revaluation of Northern Ireland, 1935

The Griffith's Valuation of c.1860 was not the end of the valuing process. Thereafter, properties were valued periodically from c.1860 until c.1930 and any changes in the names of occupants, improvement in buildings, etc. were recorded in field notebooks which are generally referred to as the Griffith's Revision Books, catalogued as VAL/12/B in PRONI. Each of the books normally cover a period of approximately ten years.

As with the printed valuation there are maps to accompany the Revision Books. The six inch maps relating to the countryside are known as the VAL/12/D series. The larger scale town maps are known as the VAL/12/E series.

The Griffith's Revision Books with their accompanying maps are very useful in linking up names in the 1858/59 Griffith's [Tenement] Valuation and the 1901 Census Returns. To help demonstrate this process I have extracted the data on changes, covering the years c.1860 to c.1911, for two groups of townlands in the Ballymoney rural area centred on Seacon/Ballywattick/Ballycormick and Roseyards/Killyramer/Kilraghts and entered the data into tables. Note that I am still working on the  Killyramer/Kilraghts revisions.

The information is presented by townland and the columns in the tables should be self-explanatory. However, it is worth pointing out that the date against a person's name in the "Changes column" in each table is the date when the valuer recorded the change. However, the change may have taken place earlier, depending on the length of time between the visits of the valuers.

I have also created two tables for Church Street in Ballymoney Town. The first table goes as far as c.1900 and the other takes the changes up to the present day. Here I have used not only the revisions to the Griffith's Valuation but also the revisions to the General Revaluation of Northern Ireland which was carried out in the early 1930s. I have also used the 1901 Census Enumerators' Returns and the 1952 Street Directory. I do not have any data from the 1960s to the present but I have included the names of each business in the street in 2006.

The numbers in the first column of the 1859 to c.1900 table refer to the numbers used in the Griffith's Printed Valuation and the associated 1859 valuation map. By 1895 the valuers were using new numbers which were associated with a new map. These 1895 numbers are shown in the first column of the c.1900 to 2006 table. Incidentally the 1895 numbers are similar to the numbers used in the street today.

I cannot guarantee that I have identified all of the houses and business premises correctly in the c.1900 to 2006 table. This is particularly the case on the south side of the street between numbers 9 to 17 and again between numbers 21 to 25. These parts of the street were redeveloped both in the early 1900s and more recently.

As mentioned above, a general revaluation of Northern Ireland was carried out in 1935 producing the equivalent of a new Griffith's for that year. This is also held in PRONI under VAL/3/B. As before revisions were carried out until c.1957, VAL/3/C. Again there are accompanying maps VAL/3/A for the countryside and VAL/3/G for towns. Further revaluations and revisions took place in 1957, 1975 and 1993 taking us up to the present day.
