Valuation Records

Valuation records of land and buildings can supply the researcher with lists of names which are often seen by genealogists as substitutes for the missing censuses before 1901. They also supply information on the houses and farms that our ancestors lived in. The fact that most valuation records have accompanying maps means that it is possible to locate individual farms and houses within townlands in the countryside and individual houses in each of the streets within towns and cities.

Below are some notes on the valuation records that are available for the nineteenth and twentieth centuries - the Townland Valuation of the 1830s, the Griffith’s Printed [Tenement] Valuation of 1848-64 [1859 to 1861 in North Antrim], the Griffith's Revisions c.1860 to c.1930 and the  1935 General Revaluation of Northern Ireland.

Below are some general notes on these records. You should also look at the PRONI Information Leaflets on the Valuation Records.

When using valuation records it is also useful to use the Tithe Applotment Books of 1828-38. For more information on these, click on the 1820s/30s Tithe Applotment Books link in the left-hand menu.
