Case Studies
[Some townlands in the Parishes of Ballymoney & Kilraghts]

Initially some of this material was produced for a couple of talks that I gave in Ballymoney a number of years ago. Since then I have added to and modified this material.

Click here for a map showing the townlands covered by this Locality Study.

Below are links to a number of sources that should be of use to both family and local historians studying this area.  The sources are presented chronologically. This should help you to follow some names and properties from the early nineteenth century to the early decades of the twentieth century.

See also Extracts from the Diary of John Tennent, apprentice to a grocer, 1786 to 1790. John Tennent was the son of the Rev. John Tennent who lived in Ballyrobin in the late eighteenth century. His name appears in the 1805 estate map of Ballyrobin. He was the minister of Roseyards Presbyterian Church. His papers, covering the period 1764-1806, are available in PRONI D1748/A.

Note that Drumaqueran, Dungorbery, Ganaby, Islandmore, Kilraghts and Lisboy were part of Kilraghts DED in 1901 and 1911 - the remainder of the townlands were in Stranocum DED. These townlands were also located in the parish of Kilraghts.

Note also, that in this particular locality study, because of the availability of estate maps, it has been possible to extend the study of families back to the early part of the nineteenth century and, in some cases, even earlier. There are estate maps available for more of the townlands in this general area. Click on Sources in the top menu and then on Sources: Estate Records and this will take you to these maps.
