[Some townlands in the Parish of Ballymoney]
Initially
some of this material was produced for a couple of
talks that I gave in Ballymoney a number of years
ago. Since then I have added to and modified this
material.
Click
here for a map showing the townlands covered in
this Locality Study.
Below
are links to a number of sources that should be of
use to both family and local historians studying this
area. The sources are presented chronologically.
This should help you to follow some names and properties
from the early nineteenth century to the early decades
of the twentieth century.
See
also Evidence
given by Alexander Burnside of Seacon to the
Devon Commission in 1845. In
this evidence he make reference to rundale which
is system of land practice associated with clachans.
Both the 1833 and the 1859 maps for many of
the townlands show clusters of houses and in
the townlands of Kilmoyle Lower and Upper the
way that the land is sub-divided is indicative
of the former practice of rundale. For more
details on clachans and rundale see Glens
of Antrim Historical Society: Clachan Project.
Note
that Ballycormick, Ballygobbin and Moneygobbin
were part of Enagh DED in 1901 and 1911 - the
remainder of the townlands were in Seacon DED.
