Civil Records

Civil registers of births and deaths are available from 1864 and civil registers of marriages are available from 1845 (in the case of Protestant marriages) and for all marriages from 1864 - read more.

The detailed information on births, deaths and marriages for Northern Ireland is held by the General Register Office in Belfast. You can also obtain information relating to Northern Ireland births, deaths and marriages before 1922 in the Research Section of the General Register Office in Abbey Street, Dublin or from the Administrative Office in Roscommon. Alternatively, you can make use of online databases - read more.

The first two links below will provide you with information on procedures, fees, etc. in the two Registry Offices within the island. The third link is to the Indexes to Births, Deaths and Marriages which are now available online at the Mormon website at www.familysearch.org. In searching for North Antrim  Ancestors your research may take you outside the county. Within Ireland go to  Irish Family History Foundation Online Genealogy Databases for Ireland [ORS] - read more. When searching for marriages in Co. Londonderry you will find the Irish Genealogy: Central Signposting Index [CSI] useful for identifying the date of a marriage.

Note that Ancestry.com can be accessed, free, at a computer at any local library throughout Northern Ireland, by using your library card. Note that you cannot access Ancestry.com [free] from your home computer.
