Maps for Ballymoney Town
In the table below there are links to a number of
maps which will show the geographical
extent and layout of the town at different times from 1734 to
the early 1930s.
You
will notice that there is not a lot of difference
between the 1734 and 1814 maps. The town revolves
around Main Street, The Diamond and High Street (known
as Upper Main Street in 1734 and Market Street in
1814), Church Street and Charlotte Street, (known as
Piper Row in 1734 and 1814), with Castle Street and
Meeting House Lane on the edge of the town. Townhead
Street is shown on both maps but is marked as the
road to Coleraine.
The
1833 map begins to show some development of the town
in the north-eastern corner of the map. This
reflected the new road from Belfast to Coleraine
which came into the town along what is now Queen
Street and through Victoria Street and Charles
Street, although the latter was only beginning to
develop in the 1830s. Also, on this map, you can see
the development of the markets between what is now
John Street and Market Street.
The
1859 and 1895 maps, which are at a greater scale
than the 1833 map, show this north-eastern area of
the town continuing to develop with High Street
beginning to link to the new Coleraine Road as the
old Coleraine Road via Townhead Street begins to
disappear.
The
1930s map which is of a similar scale to the 1833
map will allow you to see how the town developed over
the century from the 1830s to the 1930s.
The numbers on the 1734 and 1814 maps refer to lists
of tenants.
