Revisions to the 1859 Griffith's Valuation in Ballymoney Town

The Griffith's Printed Valuation was completed by 1863-4.  Thereafter, properties were visited periodically and valuers recorded changes such as the names of new occupiers. For more information on the Griffith's Revisions go to PRONI.

The valuers usually recorded a date against a change in ownership. However the date recorded does not, necessarily, mean that the change took place in that year. The change could have taken place at any time since the valuer last visited. Theoretically the valuer was supposed to visit annually but in practice he rarely did. There could be two, or even three years, between his visits.

I have examined the changes in Church Street in Ballymoney from the 1859 Griffith's Valuation up to the present day. In doing so I have used not only the revisions to the Griffith's Valuation but also the revisions to the General Revaluation of Northern Ireland which was carried out in the early 1930s. I have also used the 1901 Census Enumerators' Returns and the 1952 Street Directory. I do not have any data from the 1960s to the present but I have included the names of each business in the street in 2006.

The information is presented in two tables - one covering the period 1859 to circa 1900 and the other covering the period circa 1900 to 2006.

The numbers in the first column of the 1859 to c.1900 table refer to the numbers used in the Griffith's Printed Valuation and the associated 1859 valuation map. By 1895 the valuers were using new numbers which were associated with a new map. These 1895 numbers are shown in the first column of the c.1900 to 2006 table. Incidentally the 1895 numbers are similar to the numbers used in the street today.

I cannot guarantee that I have identified all of the houses and business premises correctly in the c.1900 to 2006 table. This is particularly the case on the south side of the street between numbers 9 to 17 and again between numbers 21 to 25. These parts of the street were redeveloped both in the early 1900s and more recently.
