Revisions to the 1859 Griffith's Valuation in
Ballymoney Rural Area
Once the
Griffith's Valuation of 1859 was completed,
arrangements were put in place to continuously
update the valuation. Valuers visited the townlands
on a fairly regular basis and noted any changes in
the names of occupants, improvements in buildings,
etc. They recorded the changes in books which are
now held in PRONI. I extracted the data on changes, covering the years 1864 to 1929, for
three groups of townlands in the Ballymoney rural area centred
on Seacon/Tullaghgore and Ballycormick/Ballywattick
and Killyramer/Kilraghts -
see
map
and entered the data into tables. Note that I am still working
on the Killyramer/Kilraghts
revisions.
The
information is presented by townland* and the
columns in the tables should be self-explanatory.
The numbers in the Description of Property column
refers to the amount of land (in acres, roods and
perches) held by occupiers. The date against a
person's name in the Changes column is the date
when the valuer recorded the change. However, the
change may have taken place earlier, depending on
the length of time between the visits of the valuers.
It is usually possible to link up the names in this
database with the names in the 1901 Census
Enumerators' Returns.
* The order of
the townlands is geographical and matches the order
of townlands in the 1901 Census Enumerators'
Returns and the 1859 Griffith's Valuation and
subsequent revisions. |
