1901 Census Enumerators' Returns for Ballymoney Town

The 1901 Census Enumerators' Returns give details of all persons living in a house on the night of 31st March 1901. As well as collecting information on persons and families, details of houses and outbuildings were also noted. For more information about these returns, go to PRONI. Note that microfilm copies of these returns are also available at the Local History Unit in the Ballymena Public Library.

Because these returns contain a vast amount of information for the town it has only been possible to database the returns for two streets - Church Street and High Street. Below there are links to three tables for each street - one which gives details of the families in some of the houses in the streets, one which gives you some information on the houses in which they lived, and one which lists the outbuildings associated with each house.

Note that some buildings are listed as uninhabited. Within towns in the 1900s many families lived in the same building in which they carried on their business. So, when the term uninhabited is used, it often means that the building is only used for business. However, we can not always be absolutely certain, some may actually be vacant.

The numbers assigned to houses by enumerators do not correspond to either the numbers used in the Griffith's Valuation nor to official street numbers.

  • However I can tell you that number 1 in Church Street begins on the south side of the street at the Diamond end of the street. The numbers referring to the north side of the street start with 19 at the Church end of the street. However, I think number 34 is actually on the south side of the street probably between 15 and 16. Sometimes enumerators left out a house and had to add it later!

  • Number 1 in High Street begins on the east side of the street at the Main Street end of the street. I think the switch to the west side of the street begins at 17, which is the Town Hall, with number 30 at the Main Street end of the street.

The tables are small enough for you to scroll through the data to find a particular name. You can search for a particular name using the Find (on This Page) command in the Edit Menu in the toolbar of your browser.

I have also created an alphabetical list of heads of families (households) in Church Street and High Street in the one table. The table includes profession, townland, house number in census and some details of each house. Click here.

Remember, however, there will be individuals with different names living within the households listed, e.g. lodgers, servants, aunts, uncles, etc. Use the Find command to search for such people.
