Griffith's Printed Valuation (1859) for Ballymoney Rural Area
During the 1850s
individual farms and houses were valued throughout
Ireland in order to determine the Poor Rate which
was used to calculate taxes in order to support the
workhouses and the operation of the Poor Law
generally. The results of this valuation were
published in printed form around 1859 and the books
were arranged by Poor Law Union. Because the whole
operation was overseen by a man called Sir Richard
Griffiths, the valuation became known as the
Griffith's Valuation. For more information on this
Valuation go to
PRONI.
The Griffith's
Valuation book
for Ballymoney Poor Law Union in County Antrim
contains 151 pages which means that it would be
impossible for me to put up copies of these 151 pages.
Instead, I am putting up tables which list the occupiers of
land and houses in each townland for the DEDs of Ballymoney, Enagh,
Kilraghts, Seacon and Stranocum. These DEDS,
more or less, cover the parishes of Ballymoney and Kilraghts
- see map.
Note that Ballymoney
DED tables do not include Townparks and the Town. Also, I
have included the townland of Conogher (which is
part of Benvarden DED) in the Stranocum tables - and
- the townland of Garryduff (which is part of Dunloy
DED) in the Enagh tables.

So that you can see
some of the actual pages from the Valuation Book, I have chosen
three smaller areas within the parishes of
Ballymoney and Kilraghts centred
on Seacon/Tullaghgore, Ballycormick/Ballywattick and Killyramer/Kilraghts
- see
map
In the first table,
below, there are links to the pages which cover these three areas. Below that there are
links to the maps which show where the houses and
holdings listed in these pages were located each
townland.
Within these three areas you
can now follow the changes in
occupiers that took place in each
townland between 1864 and the early
1900s by looking at the Griffith's Revisions. This means that you can
link up the 1859 Griffith's
Valuation and the 1901 Census
