1803 Agricultural Census for the Parishes of
Ballymoney and Kilraghts
During the Napoleonic
Wars Lord Lieutenants for each of the maritime
counties in Great Britain and Ireland were required
to carry out an agricultural census enumerating
livestock, crops stored, etc. These returns also
contained the names of farmers and where they lived.
One such census was
carried out in 1803 for County Antrim. Some of this
census survives, particularly for North Antrim. I
have entered the names of farmers recorded in the
parishes of Ballymoney and Kilraghts in the tables
listed below. Note that in the tables there is a
column which lists the original spelling of surnames
recorded in the census and a
column with a modern-day or more common spelling
selected by me. The table is sorted by common
spelling which means that various spellings of a
particular surname are kept together. Incidentally,
you may not agree with some of my interpretations.
Feel free to make up your own mind.
Note that there are two
tables - one sorted primarily by surname and
the other by parish and townland.
